Pornography addiction

Pornography addiction

A husband was suspicious of his wife so he hired a private detective to find out whether she had a lover or not. The detective came back to report after only two days. His arm and nose were broken and his head was tied up in bandages. “What happened?” the husband enquired eagerly. “Any proof yet?”

“Well,” the detective answered, “I hid outside your house when you left in the morning. After half an hour a man came and let himself in with a key. I climbed a tree to see into the bedroom, and there was he holding she and she kissing he. So he play with she and she play with he; I play with me and I fall down from the tree.”

That is what pornography is.

Our culture has “normalized” the use of pornography without considering the biological, mental, social and spiritual consequences. Most people believe pornography to be harmless. Scientific studies using brain imaging technology disagree.

The statistics on internet pornography is staggering. According to compiled numbers every second over 3 million rand is being spent on pornography. Every second over 28 000 internet users are viewing pornography. Every 39 minutes a new pornographic video is being created in the United States.

Symptoms related to porn addiction include:

  • Distress about escalation to more extreme porn
  • Delayed ejaculation
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Frequent masturbation, little satisfaction
  • Social anxiety/lack of confidence
  • Inability to concentrate, restlessness
  • Depression, anxiety, brain fog
  • Low energy levels
  • Low motivation

There are a number of important things to remember when dealing with porn addiction:

  1. Porn is often viewed secretly by one of the partners and when it is inevitably discovered by a spouse this leads to feelings of insecurity, frustration and betrayal
  2. Porn usage has a devastating impact on the physical well-being of humans
  3. Porn usage is considered normal in society, especially by men. This belief comes from a time when porn availability was limited. It may be time to revisit these beliefs due to the way porn and porn usage has changed.
  4. A large quantity of hyper stimulating and graphical images are freely available to children and adults
  5. Dopamine is a natural hormone produced by the brain. Porn addiction means that through excessive usage of hyper stimulating graphical images in combination with masturbation you will now be training your brain that this is normal and you will be addicted to a naturally produced internal hormone
